Recognized as a ‘Bike-Friendly Community’, Tahoe features dedicated bike paths and clearly marked lanes, making it easy for cyclists of all levels to explore, from family-friendly routes to more challenging singletracks. It is also very easy to rent a bike here too. Road cyclists can test their mettle (and thighs) on the legendary 14-mile (22.5 km) circuit of Flume Trail, pausing for a coffee at one of the many lakeside towns on-route. Or if traveling with the little ones, the Tahoe Rim Trail provides scenic routes for riders of all ages. An evening on the water after a day of cycling should be added to the agenda, with this evening dinner cruise the ideal nighttime activity. Enjoy a fresh menu of delicious food, including locally sourced meats and a sweet treat to finish, followed by live music against the mountainous backdrop of the setting sun. After the cruise head to South Lake Tahoe to get stuck into the town’s vibrant nightlife and visit Whiskey Dick’s Saloon, a dive bar, or the Tiki Bar to sip cocktails along the beachfront to end the night.

Drift past lavender fields in Furano, before ascending the gentle volcanic inclines of Daisetsuzan National Park, where the air is crisp and clean. From the coastal route around Shakotan Peninsula, a 30 km (18.6 miles) ride around the mountainous peninsula to the Lake Toya cycling route which offers volcanic views softened by hot spring detours, no two rides in Hokkaido feel the same. Off the bike, Hokkaido is a festival of flavors and sights, selling freshly caught seafood, including sea urchin and Hakodate squid, in bustling fishing towns to the mesmerizing avant-garde architecture of HIGO and the 360° house in Sapporo.

Perched on the eastern edge of Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island has quietly built a reputation as a cyclist’s paradise. The gentle Celtic Shores Coastal Trail meanders through Acadian fishing villages and along windswept beaches, where the only traffic is often a gathering of herons. After your ride, indulge in the island’s mouthwatering seafood, including snow crab and buttery lobster, served fresh at dockside shacks and end the day at a lively ceilidh, a traditional Scottish social gathering which dates back to the 1700s brought over by Scottish immigrants, where everyone’s welcome to dance (enthusiasm required, rhythm strictly optional!).
