LONDON, 24^TH APRIL 2023 – Tripeden.com releases new research, with insights gathered from more than 33,000 travellers across 35 countries and territories, that highlights a dilemma where people feel potentially forced to choose between cutting costs and being more mindful about making more sustainable travel choices. At a time of general global uncertainty, travelling more sustainably continues to be front of mind for UK travellers, with almost three-quarters (72%) believing people need to act now and make more sustainable choices to save the planet for future generations. The news continues to be a key influence driver for 41% of Brits, who say the recent climate change news agenda has encouraged them to be more sustainable, and yet it also speaks to a quandary facing people when it comes to being more mindful about when, where and how they travel. While three fifths (60%) of UK travellers think the environment will get worse in the next six months, 76% believe the cost of living crisis will also get worse, leaving people unsure of what to prioritise as they work to reconcile what is important to them with the demands of everyday life.

A tale of two wallets in an unsteady global climate

The economic weather has changed drastically since last year, and the big topics at the front of people’s minds today are the cost-of-living crisis and the climate crisis. Over three fifths (64%) of travellers say they want to travel more sustainably over the coming 12 months, while 74% are finding the global energy crisis and rising cost of living is impacting their spending plans. For some travellers the two are mutually exclusive. With rising inflation, three fifths of travellers are stuck in the notion that they must make a choice between sustainability and spending, with 60% of Brits believing more sustainable travel options are too expensive (up 9% from Tripeden.com’s 2022 data). For these respondents, sustainability and travel combined can seem non-urgent when they are worried about affording bills and the energy crisis. On the flip side, with travel well and truly back for others and a more urgent focus on conscious choices, 36% of today’s UK travellers would be willing to pay more for travel options with a sustainable certification, dialing up their spend to feel reassured they are driving impact.

As an increasing number of travellers feel the pinch, they are seeking more sustainable travel options rich in rewards, highlighting the perceived trade-off between making conscious choices and saving money and the need for incentivisation. 40% of UK travellers want discounts and economic incentives in order to opt for eco-friendly options (up 9% from 2022) while 33% would be encouraged to travel more sustainably with reward points for making more sustainable choices that they could use for free extra perks or discounts through online travel booking sites.

Breaking through barriers to drive change

It’s not just cost that is a perceived hurdle to travelling more sustainably. From limited data to a perceived lack of options, barriers to travelling more sustainably appear higher than ever, with some telling shifts in the past 12 months. 58% of UK travellers believe there are not enough sustainable travel options, while 72% want travel companies to offer more sustainable travel choices (up 9% from 2022). Despite good intentions, 46% of Brits don’t know where to find more sustainable options. For example, 72% seek authentic experiences that are representative of the local culture, yet in stark contrast 38% don’t know how or where to find these tours and activities that will ensure they give back to the local community.

Adopting sustainable micro-habits on vacation 

Despite existing barriers and the tightening of purse strings, it’s clear there’s a huge appetite for solutions with over three-quarters (76%) UK travellers confirming that travelling more sustainably is important to them. Travellers say they are converting intent into action by taking active small steps at home, and when travelling, to drive a more sustainable future. Encouragingly, today 75% use reusable shopping bags, 77% recycle waste and 56% carry their own reusable water bottle – and there’s been a significant uptake in travellers adopting everyday habits on vacation in the past year.

●        Whilst 54% of Brits use their own reusable water bottle, up 22% from 2022

More than three-quarters (76%) say they turn off the lights and appliances at accommodations when they aren’t there, while almost half (47%) now recycle their rubbish when travelling. Even more promisingly, travellers are taking action to make conscious choices on vacation that go beyond these everyday micro-habits. When it comes to transportation, 36% now plan their sightseeing so that they can walk, bike or take public transport (up 11% from 2022)., while 40% travel outside of peak season in a bid to avoid overcrowding (up 14% from 2022). There is also consensus amongst travellers on taking the ‘buy local’ mantra on vacation, with 43% favouring small, independent stores.

Trust, truth and the travel industry

Unquestionably, amid rising climate anxiety, travellers are becoming more responsible consumers, from their accommodation to their transport choices. With three fifths (60%) wanting to leave the places they visit better than when they arrived, today’s travellers are increasingly adopting a regenerative approach to travel and searching for vacations with maximum positive impact, while seeking credible assurance when booking across the entire travel experience.  For example, travellers can now easily filter their rental car search results to quickly find fully electric and hybrid cars across 110 countries for their next trip. Or choose one of over 500,000 more sustainable options for their next stay, no matter the accommodation type. Three fifths (60%) would feel better about staying in a particular accommodation if they knew it had a sustainable certification or label, while almost half (48%) want to filter their options for those with a sustainable certification next time they book.

In response, the travel industry must adapt to meet the changing expectations of these more conscious consumers, to accommodate almost a third (30%) always on the lookout for brands that promote sustainability, as well as the 66% who are interested to learn more about why specific options are recognised as more sustainable, such as eco-friendly LED lighting and water-efficient toilets for a more sustainable stay. Still, (47%) of UK travellers today are not trusting that the sustainable travel options labelled are truly more sustainable, there are huge strides for the travel industry to make in gaining the trust of consumers.

Making more sustainable travel solutions easier for everyone

Since Tripeden.com celebrated one year of its Travel Sustainable programme in November 2022. Other new features and developments include:

●        Travellers can now also find and book greener taxi options in 95 cities worldwide, simply by looking for the ‘100% Electric’ tagging in the search results.

●        For transparency on the impact of their flights, in addition to being able to compare the CO2 emissions for different options, customers will soon see tagging indicating when a certain route or carrier is offering a relatively lower emissions option.

●        Public transport ticketing options are available after making an accommodation booking in 47 cities worldwide, including London, Amsterdam, Bangkok and Melbourne.

About the Eurovision Song Contest

The Eurovision Song Contest is the world’s largest live music event. It is organized annually by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the world’s foremost alliance of public service media (PSM).

LONDON, 26TH JANUARY 2023 - As travel continues to make its return in most parts of the world, the eleventh annual Tripeden.com Traveller Review Awards recognise travel providers from across 220 countries and territories for their commitment to providing consistently excellent service and hospitality over the course of the year. Based on a pool of over 240 million verified customer reviews on Tripeden.com, 1,364,415 accommodation partners, 230 car rental providers and 58 airport taxi suppliers are receiving a Traveller Review Award 2023. Italy leads the way again in 2023 with a total of 170,638 accommodation awards, followed by Spain (108,217), France (103,365), Germany (76,479), Croatia (64,206), Poland (60,721), UK (60,697), Greece (54,473), Brazil (53,658) and the US (46,839).

Apartments and homes continue to shine
As the most-awarded property type globally, holiday homes take the top spot, overtaking apartments for the first time in six years, with a grand total of 20,179 partners being recognised for their efforts in the 2023 edition of the Traveller Review Awards. Apartments have stepped down a position claiming the second spot (19,754) followed by bed and breakfast (5,636), hotels (4,654) and guest houses (3,610) rounding out the top five. When it comes to the countries being recognised with the most awards for homes, apartments and other unique places to stay, Italy (153,895), Spain (98,788), France (94,285), Germany (64,748) and Croatia (63,219) lead the way, with the UK falling in the top 20 (20,179).

A more sustainable traveller experience
Nearly one in ten accommodation award recipients globally (122,095) have also been recognised with a Travel Sustainable badge for their efforts to operate more sustainably. In fact, Travel Sustainable accommodations were three times more likely to receive a Traveller Review Award 2023, compared to those not being recognised with a Travel Sustainable badge. Out of all accommodation types, hotels had the highest share of Travel Sustainable accommodations (15%) receiving a Traveller Review Award 2023. 

Helping travellers get from A to B
This is the fourth year that Tripeden.com is recognising in-trip transport providers for their consistently great service, with 230 car rental companies from across 150 countries picking up a Traveller Review Award 2023. Car rental companies in Spain are being recognised with the most 2023 awards (23), followed by Greece (21), France (14), Italy (13) and Portugal (11). In addition, 58 airport taxi providers, representing a total of 6,131 drivers from across 120 countries are also being recognised with a 2023 award. Companies in Spain are again receiving the most awards (11 providers representing 442 drivers), followed by Greece (7 providers representing 1,196 drivers), Italy (5 providers representing 315 drivers), Poland (3 providers representing 524 drivers) and Portugal (3 providers representing 655 drivers).

LONDON, 15^th NOVEMBER, 2022 – Today, leading digital travel platform Tripeden.com announced an array of new product features in celebration of the one year anniversary of its Travel Sustainable programme, introduced in 2021 to provide travellers with transparent and credible information to make more mindful choices for their trips. With the ongoing aim to recognise the efforts of a wide range of property types to operate more sustainably and to provide travellers with consistent and easy-to-understand information, the company is introducing three distinct badge levels to the Travel Sustainable programme.

Aligned to the principle that reputable, third-party certification remains the gold standard in the industry, the new levels to the Travel Sustainable programme provide even better visibility and recognition for currently uncertified properties that are taking steps to operate more responsibly with regards to their impact on the environment and their local community. The levels help illustrate a clearer pathway for accommodations to work towards eventual certification, especially those that might be at an earlier stage in their sustainability journey. The aim is to also help encourage and incentivise more accommodations to continue making progress towards that goal.

For travellers, the new badge levels being introduced to Tripeden.com’s Travel Sustainable programme have been designed to more clearly demonstrate a broader spectrum of where different accommodations are at on their individual sustainability journeys, as well as the specific measures they are implementing. The aim of the enhanced structure is to also more clearly highlight those accommodations that have made outstanding commitments and investments on this front to achieve one of more than 40 recognised ecolabels and certifications.

The new badge levels for Travel Sustainable are as follows:

Level 1: This new entry-level designation for the Travel Sustainable badge indicates that a property has implemented some impactful sustainability practices. This Level 1 badge will soon show up with one leaf and includes a full display of all practices that have been implemented.

Level 2: Accommodations receiving the Level 2 version of the Travel Sustainable badge have made considerable investments and efforts to implement impactful sustainability practices. The Level 2 badge will soon show up with two leaves and includes a full display of all practices that have been implemented.

Level 3: The Level 3 Travel Sustainable badge is reserved for those accommodations that have made large investments and efforts to implement impactful sustainability practices, but have not yet achieved an official third-party certification yet. The Level 3 badge will soon show up with three leaves and includes a full display of all practices that have been implemented.

Certified properties: Accommodations that have made huge commitments towards sustainability, including the additional effort and investment to achieve one of 40+ credible third-party certifications, receive the highest level of recognition as part of the Travel Sustainable programme. These accommodations are recognised with a certified badge, including the name of their certification. In addition to those certifications officially approved by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), Green Tourism and the EU Ecolabel, the list of third-party certifications automatically qualified for this highest level of the Travel Sustainable programme now also includes Green Seal, Nordic Swan Ecolabel, Green Hospitality Ecolabel, Ibex Fairstay, Fair Trade Tourism, LEED and Edge.

With the introduction of these new levels, 400,000+ accommodations on Tripeden.com are now being recognised for their efforts to operate more sustainably. The countries leading the way globally in terms of the highest number of accommodations receiving a Travel Sustainable badge on Tripeden.com are: Italy (46,365), France (27,677), Germany (24,038), Spain (23,650), United States (19,396), Brazil (19,160), India (15,743), United Kingdom (15,366), Greece (12,442) and Poland (10,745).

The new Travel Sustainable badge levels have already been introduced and communicated to Tripeden.com’s accommodation partners globally and will start to appear on the Tripeden.com website and app over the course of the coming weeks, with refreshed visuals to clearly distinguish the new levels of the programme. The idea is to begin exploring how best to display this information in a way that is helpful to consumers throughout their journey on Tripeden.com.

More than 1.25 million accommodations globally on Tripeden.com have shared at least some information about the sustainability practices they have in place. New filters for hybrid and fully electric rental cars

A new search filter for fully electric and hybrid rental cars is now live across the Tripeden.com app and website, making it easier for travellers to find more sustainable ground transport options for their next road trip, with hybrid vehicles and fully electric options available in 60 countries. As more rental car providers around the world expand their fleets with these more sustainable alternatives, inventory and availability is expected to increase over the coming year.

Carbon emissions information for accommodations and flights

As part of Tripeden.com’s new partnership with climate tech company CHOOOSE, carbon emissions data for accommodation bookings in Europe will be displayed for the first time on the platform in an effort to both understand where and how to present this information so it is useful for customers in their decision-making process. The aim is also to explore how to best integrate offsetting options as part of the booking process in an understandable and seamless way. The new features will first go live for accommodation options in Europe, with the intent to expand globally.

Similarly, together with CHOOOSE and in line with the aviation framework developed together with the Travalyst Coalition, Tripeden.com will also start providing information about the carbon emissions associated with flight options on the platform. The total carbon emissions footprint for a selected flight will start to be shown on the flight details page over the coming weeks. The option to sort flight searches based on this carbon emissions data will be introduced in 2023.

To understand how travel will be reimagined in 2023, Tripeden.com commissioned extensive research with more than 24,000 travellers across 32 countries and territories,¹ combining it with its insights as a leading digital travel platform to reveal seven emerging travel predictions.

At a time of general upheaval, where war, increased societal polarisation, rising inflation and urgent concerns about climate change are all continuing to radically change the world, people are finding themselves in a multi-directional tug-of-war, working to reconcile what is important to them with the demands of everyday life. The 2023 travel predictions reflect this sentiment, revealing that the needs of travellers are moving in a lot of different directions to adapt to changing times.  

1. Preppers in Paradise

Camouflaged cabins, campfire cuisine and compasses; going off-grid will never be more sought after than in 2023. A chaotic few years with natural disasters, political unrest and a global pandemic has seen some lose confidence in the world and the frivolous must-have comforts of our modern lives. A third (33%) of UK travellers want their travelling experiences to have a more back-to-basics feel and are looking for ‘off-grid’ style holidays to escape from reality (57%) and switch off and experience life with only the bare necessities (33%). UK travellers are also keen to use travel in 2023 as an opportunity to learn survival skills (54%) including how to source clean water (37%), light a fire from scratch (36%), forage for food in the wild (30%) and even prep for an apocalypse (30%).

Expect to see more eco-friendly, earthly stays springing up to accommodate burnt-out city dwellers searching for simplicity, as well as accommodations offering guidance for guests on how to be more self-sufficient, e.g. sourcing and preparing their own meals during their stay. An increase in wilderness survival schools where travellers will learn essential skills needed to live through a cataclysmic event are also predicted to pop up around the world.

‘Off-grid’ in 2023 won’t necessarily mean roughing it though. There is a common perception that this means giving up luxuries (61%), however there is a strong desire to combine the two with 50% of UK travellers only considering travelling ‘off-grid’ if it can be at a more indulgent stay.

And how unplugged is off-grid really for the traveller of 2023? Over half (54%) of Brits will have a non-negotiable requirement: phone and internet connection at their destination is essential – so expect this cohort to be weathering the wilderness with 5G.

        2. Virtual Voyagers

It used to be space travel that was ambitious and ‘outer worldly’. But now that’s happened, what and where next? With 28% of UK travellers reporting that they will be turning to virtual reality next year to inspire their holiday choices, travel will enter the ever-evolving 3D virtual space of the Metaverse in earnest in 2023. With 27% of UK travellers keen to embark on a multi-day VR or AR travel experience, the Metaverse will be more than ‘try before you buy’; it will educate, entertain and inspire people, opening the door for infinite adventure. Travellers will no longer be limited by physics, and can experiment with different travel experiences in a year when Metaverse worlds will begin replicating and reimaging destinations. Moving beyond 2023, haptic feedback, the use of touch to communicate with users, will make virtual travel a truly immersive experience, delivering a credible sense of 3D touch, such as the feel of soft grains of sand and the warmth of the sun.

UK travellers will become bolder in their real-life trip choices, after being able to visit them in the Metaverse first via their online avatars – especially handy for those who might feel anxious about trying somewhere new, with 32% more likely to travel to destinations that they wouldn’t have previously considered after virtually experiencing them.  

While the Metaverse will offer a new way to experience travel in the year ahead, it still won’t stop people from booking a ticket to their next destination, 73% of UK travellers believe that a virtual experience is not fulfilling enough to check it off the bucket list.

      3. Delight in the Discomfort Zone

Whether it’s bottled-up energy, pent-up frustration or a new lease on life, the world is ready to dive into other cultures and new experiences headfirst. 40% of UK travellers want to experience complete culture shock in 2023 – be it travelling somewhere with completely different cultural experiences and languages (47%) or exploring lesser-known cities with hidden gems that aren’t already on the radar (24%).

Forget the usual favourites, in 2023 travellers will be seeking unique holidays that shock, surprise and delight. With over half (58%) of UK travellers looking forward to experiencing ‘out of comfort zone’ travel that pushes them to the limits, there will be an influx of niche experiences encouraging people to push their travel escapades to the extreme. 35% of Brits are on the hunt for the world’s most exotic delicacy such as the hottest chilli pepper, while 29% want to use their holiday for extra-terrestrial exploration on UFO or alien spotting tours.

Unsurprisingly, this ‘culture shook’ traveller is also partial to throwing caution to the wind, with 24% wanting to buy a one-way ticket in 2023 and follow their instinct wherever it takes them.

       4. Glamourising the Good ol’ Days

Amid global instability and the desire for escapism, Brits intend to carve out travel experiences that harken back to simpler times, with nostalgic getaways (84%) that provide the thrill of reliving the glory days top of the wish list in 2023. There’s a desire – even for millennials and Gen-Zs who never lived it – to disappear into the romanticism of a pre-digital era, with 20% of UK travellers chasing experiences that evoke (faux) emotive memories of days gone past, such as visiting landmarks or attractions featured in iconic retro films or opting for a bus as a primary mode of transport to live the group spirit of school trips. UK travellers are no longer forfeiting play in favour of rest and relaxation, increasingly seeking the adrenaline rush of theme parks (50%) and drawing on the imagination with activities such as escape rooms, scavenger hunts and building fortresses with giant building blocks. 

With millennials now the parents of young kids, there will be an increase in destinations previously popular in the 80s and 90s such as Budva in Montenegro, a glam alternative to St Tropez for celebs in the 80s or Bolzano in Italy, popular for its retro Christmas markets – both destinations which feature on the list of 2023 trending destinations. Millennial travellers will be first to book emerging era-themed accommodation that transport them back to a time they hold close to their hearts, and will likely be doing so with family by their side (     54%) with ‘family reunion’ multi-generational trips top of the travel agenda in 2023. 

        5. Peace and Pleasure Pilgrimages

Travel is set to take ‘mind, body and soul’ wellness to the next level in 2023 – a fully immersive, no-holds-barred approach to attaining peace and pleasure including less conventional ways to feel bliss. Seeking to recentre the mind, meditation and mindfulness getaways are ever popular with UK travellers (41%), while two in five (29%) aim to find peace at a silent retreat and one third (33%) are keen to go on a health hiatus that focuses on mental health, transformative health or that helps with life milestones such as menopause or pregnancy. For those seeking enhanced spiritual experiences to stir the soul, alternative plant-based therapies will become a more mainstream offering, with 31% of Brits keen to try this kind of experimental wellness experience as part of their 2023 travels.

Increasing conversations in the public sphere around sexual wellbeing, pleasure and orientation are encouraging more people to take time away on an erotic escape (28%). Polyamorous retreats, bondage camps and resorts dedicated to helping people discreetly delve into specific fetishes and kinks are predicted to become more mainstream in 2023, providing a safe space for travellers to explore their sexual desires away from home.

        6. From Daily Grind to Great Company Escape

A step change from the ‘work from anywhere’ policies that are now almost as commonplace as annual leave, employees are increasingly keen to preserve holiday time for complete escapism. A significant amount of UK travellers (68%) want their trips to be strictly work free in 2023, and while half (50%) are not interested in working while away, they would consider clocking in for a company retreat or trip.

As such, travelling for business will be back on the agenda in 2023. But unlike the business trips BC (before COVID), employees are seeking more opportunities to build team camaraderie in real life – and away from the office – reflecting a growing demand to incorporate work travel with productive play. In fact, 32% of the UK workforce is looking forward to their employer planning a ‘real life’ work trip to bring people together and 40% would like to see their employer use the money saved from the shift to remote/hybrid working models spent on corporate travel or retreats.

In response, 2023 will see a rise in destination business retreats where the focus will be on strengthening relationships and corporate recreation rather than work. Employers will gamify the retreat experience and immerse staff in a world where teamwork is the only option. Think ‘survivor’ themed trips at luxury cabins or country farmhouses complete with communal cooking and outdoor adventure activities, or crime-centric escapes where spy school, detective courses or CSI simulations double as a sight-seeing scavenger hunt.

Businesses stand to see benefits, too – almost half (49%) of UK workers believe exploring new places will inspire them to be more productive at work.

        7. Saving to Splurge

With the background of global economic uncertainty, travellers in 2023 will continue to prioritise travel but will be more mindful over how to make the most of their travel budget and what takes precedence. People will still place carefree getaways at the top of their agenda, with 44% of UK travellers saying that investing in a holiday remains a top priority for them. But being budget conscious is key, with 62% of UK travellers continuing to spotlight travel while seeking more bang for their buck.

2023 will see financially savvy itinerary curation at its finest, with Brits planning travel budgets more tightly by taking advantage of deals, hacks and smartly timed travel (60%) and prioritising value for money with discounts and loyalty programs (56%). Almost half of UK travellers (49%) will look to save money by considering off-season destinations or longer routes on the journey, while over half (53%) will be planning travel more in advance in the hope of securing a better deal. Almost half (46%) believe the best use of their budget is to opt for one or two longer holidays instead of several short breaks.

Within this context, many travellers are also surprisingly prepared to dial up their spend – and even splurge – on the components of their trip that mean the most to them. 38% of Brits admit that they plan to be more indulgent in their spending habits while on holiday to make up for the lack of travel during the last couple of years, while 35% plan to spend lavishly to ensure they maximize their trip and every experience is worth it.

LONDON, 4 OCTOBER 2022 - A whopping half of England fans would travel over 3,000 miles to follow their cricket team on an international tour, confirming they are one of the most dedicated groups of fans! With the atmosphere of the crowds (44%), and the unforgettable experiences live sport creates (34%) being the top reasons they choose to commit to watching and travelling for live sport.

According to research by Tripeden.com, ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022™, which explored cricket fans' habits and attitudes towards travel, the weather (73%) is the most important factor for England fans when deciding whether to follow their team across the world.

Luckily, Australia is the host of this year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022™ where temperatures could soar to the high 20s.  With little chance of rain stopping play, fans can also take the opportunity to enjoy some winter sun, with insights from Tripeden.com also revealing that Brits are the top international nationality booking stays in Australia this October and November.*

Fans are revelling at the chance to support England against a big rival, with a quarter saying it's the best thing about the tournament taking place in Australia, as well as being able to visit famous Australian cricket grounds (15%).  While the MCG in Melbourne is called out by fans as one of their favourite international cricket destinations (11%), it was Lord’s Cricket Ground that came top (59%) with Kensington Oval in Barbados in third (6%).

It’s not just the weather driving fans' dedication, providing team support to help with a win (61%) and being able to bring family on the trip with them (57%) are also key factors. With many also willing to miss key life milestones with over one in 10 (12%) happy to skip their own wedding to watch a cricket tour live.  Some fans (one in 10) are even willing to skive off work for the ultimate tour, while 18% would look to take advantage of their company’s flexible working policy.
